Medical insurance is mandatory for all International Students studying in Canada. However health insurance requirements and availably differs from province to province.
The Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan provide International Students with health insurance through their Provincial Health Insurance Plans. However registration procedure and wait times are different in each province. Health Plan registration can be done at your Learning Institute at the time of your arrival.
The following provinces do not cover international students under their Provincial Health Care Plans:
- Manitoba
- New Brunswick
- Newfoundland
- Nova Scotia
- Ontario
- Prince Edward Island
- Québec
International students studying in these provinces must arrange for private medical coverage through private insurance companies. Please note however that international students attending an Ontario university or affiliated college are required to purchase the compulsory University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP).

Where ever you are studying in Canada we strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance from the time you leave home until the time your Canadian health care coverage begins. In addition you should have travel insurance for when you are traveling outside the province in which your are studying, particularly if you are leaving Canada.
